Salento, know as the Salento Peninsula, is the south-eastern tip of the Apulia region of Italy. Known as the Heel of Italy, is a subregion of Italy sandwiched between two beautiful seas: the Ionian Sea (West) and the Adriatic Sea (East) with more than 250 km of coast sometimes low and Sandy, sometimes high and indented.

It was a land of conquest in the East with the passage of Greeks, Byzantines and the Barbarian pirates. The first inhabitants of Salento were the Messaps, famous horse breeders, who arrived from the coast of Illyria.

Salento is a piece of land rich of history and traditions whose strong points are its natural and architectural beauties, hospitality, magic atmosphere, several wonders to be discover, warm sun, blue sky, crystal sea and dreamlike coast

The landscape is mainly Mediterranean and tends to vary from place to place depending on the type of terrain.

The landscape, mainly made of crumbly rocks, is dominated by holm wood (which gave the name to the capital: Lecce), eucalyptus, olive groves, vineyards and old oaks.

In the low hills and near the coast where the rocks rise from the ground, one can find herbs (sage, mint, rosemary, bay leaves, thyme), prickly pears and agaves that are well suited to its calcareous nature.

The countryside of Salento, reflects the culture of its inhabitants. It is covered by a myriad of olive trees and vineyards which dominates landscape as a testimony to the richness of their product

To complete the landscape there are dozens of towers along the coast, funerary monuments (dolmen and menhir), rural constructions as trulli, pajare, specche, and the fantastic Baroque monuments made with local stone.

Among its towns, Gallipoli, the beautiful city, with its castle, characteristic old town and fantastic coastline; Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost tip of the heel of Italy, the prestigious tourist resort placed between two seas, with its nineteenth-century villas and beautiful coastline; And of course, Lecce, the capital of the Salento area, with its magnificent monuments, with the triumph of the Baroque, with its ancient history and his great cultural and artistic tradition.
